Educational Service

The Mário Soares and Maria Barroso Foundation promotes the development of competences for a culture of democracy.

Based on the lives of Mário Soares and Maria Barroso, we access the History of Freedom and Democracy. Our work relies on a rich diversified heritage, which includes the Foundation’s archives and collection.

Guide visit to the Office of Mário Soares, the Archives, the garden and the temporary exhibition “Mário Soares: 100 years”.

Workshops

Once upon a time… at the João Soares Library

Puppet and shadow theatre performances, adapted from different children’s literature works by Portuguese and foreign authors, listed on the National Reading Plan. Activities include arts expression workshops related with the theme of each story.

Art at the Museum-House garden

Activity developed at the João Soares Museum-House Garden, focused on the work “The Christ of Fishermen”, by German artist Hein Semke, exhibited at the garden.

Freedom, a wonder tale: a giant game of glory

Puppet theatre play based on the book “The Treasure” by Manuel António Pina, followed by the participation in a giant game of glory focused on the 25 April 1974 Revolution theme. Several questions must then be answered regarding the book and the historical events therein.

Continuity Projects

Unarchiving Democracy
Educational project for democratic citizenship based on the archives of The Mário Soares and Maria Barroso Foundation, with a digital presence through the Foundation’s Instagram (@fmsoaresbarroso). The document selection and curatorship process, as well as the production of contents, are developed in a co-creation setting, with the involvement of elementary school (3rd cycle) and high-school students.

  • Dates: 1st and 2nd semesters
  • Duration: 5 sessions | 60 min/session
  • Age Groups: elementary school (3rd cycle) and high-school students.

ISBN – Roaming and Dreaming in the Chest of Narratives
Promote tale telling and the lending of a chest with books to the schools of Cortes – Elementary Schools and Kindergartens.

  • Age Group: Elementary School (1st cycle)

Holidays at the Museum-House
The João Soares Museum-House has created a program for leisure times during the Easter, Summer and Christmas holidays, organizing educational workshops for children. This program includes a volunteer component, enabling the enrolling of young assistants aged 13 to 21 years old.

Live Life!
Project aimed at promoting active healthy ageing, consisting of weekly activities for senior citizens.

  • Duration: weekly sessions | 60 min
  • Age: 60+

Mário Soares Citizenship and Development Award
Established by the Portuguese Socialist Delegation in the European Parliament, S&D Group - Association of Deputies, is awarded annually and aims to recognize students from the 3rd Cycle of Basic Education and Secondary Education for their work in promoting the European dimension of citizenship.
