Carnation Revolution

"The Democracy installed by the April Revolution in Portugal, in 1974, was accompanied by the wish of inventing another destiny for Portugal”, Eduardo Lourenço wrote.

50 years later, we live and celebrate April as a legacy, but with our eyes set in the future.

The program of the Mário Soares and Maria Barroso Foundation for the commemoration of the 25 April focuses on claiming history and memory as tools for freedom and the future.

Three objectives sustain and guide the activities to be developed under this program:

• Share the history of Portuguese revolution.
• Strengthen the quality of democracy, by securing an open transparent access to cultural heritage
• Promote the development of competences for a democratic culture.

The program will be implemented from 2024 to 2026, in line with the time schedule of the Official Commemorations Program, and in close co-ordination with the Birth Centennials of Mário Soares (2024) and Maria Barroso (2025).
