Guided tours to the Foundation in May

The&nbsp;Fundação Mário Soares e Maria Barroso&nbsp;presents, from 27 May to 10 July, the exhibition&nbsp;“On the 50th Anniversary of the Approval of the Constitution”, featuring photographs by photojournalist&nbsp;Inácio Ludgero. Admission is free.

The opening will take place on 27 May at 6:30 pm, at the Foundation (Rua de São Bento, 160, Lisbon). Registration <a href="https://forms.gle/HeHipJh9d3PbUwaq6">here</a>.

The exhibition brings together 15 photographs taken by Inácio Ludgero while working for the newspapers&nbsp;A Capital&nbsp;and&nbsp;O Jornal, during the proceedings of the&nbsp;Assembleia Constituinte, offering a unique record of a decisive moment in the consolidation of democracy in Portugal.

On this occasion, the protocol for the deposit of Inácio Ludgero’s archive at the Fundação Mário Soares e Maria Barroso will also be formalised. This collection is already partially available on the Foundation’s digital platform, <a href="http://casacomum.org/cc/arquivos?set=e_18132">Casa Comum</a>, reinforcing public access to important sources for Portugal’s contemporary history.

The event will take place on May 26 at 6:00 pm, in the auditorium of the Fundação Mário Soares e Maria Barroso (Rua de S. Bento, 160, Lisbon).

The book is published by Âncora Editora and will be presented by Helena Pereira de Melo, Pedro Costa and Maria Flor Pedroso.

Presentation of the book +25 de Novembro de 1975 - Um Jornalista no COPCON", by Luís Pinheiro de Almeida

The book 'Maria Barroso: os legados' will be presented at the Templo da Poesia Auditorium, in Parque dos Poetas, Oeiras, on 13 May at 9:00 pm, as part of the “Café com Letras” series organised by the Oeiras Municipal Libraries.

The discussion will feature Isabel Soares, Maria Isabel de Jesus and Ana Paula Ferreira, and will be moderated by Jorge Reis-Sá.

The event will be streamed live on the Facebook pages of the Oeiras Municipal Libraries and Oeiras Cultura

An international conference in honour of Mário Soares, with the participation of politicians, intellectuals and academics, which concludes the celebrations of Mário Soares' centenary.

The conference will take place at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in 2026.

The initiative is part of the Mário Soares Centenary programme.

Guided tours to the Foundation in April

The exhibition ‘Mário Soares: 100 Years’ will be on show at the Santa Maria Secondary School in Sintra between April 24 and May 15 2026.

This exhibition showcases the life of Mário Soares, his thoughts, interests and values, his struggle and action for freedom and democracy, and his national and international legacy.&nbsp;

The initiative is part of the Mário Soares Centenary commemorations programme.

Mário Soares: 100 Years’ exhibition at Escola Secundária de Santa Maria, Sintra

On&nbsp;23 and 24 April 2026, the international meeting&nbsp;“FREI – From Resistance to European Integration”&nbsp;will take place in Lisbon, under the theme&nbsp;“Unarchiving Democracy: Youth, post-colonial memory and the construction of democracy in Portugal”.&nbsp;The event will be held in English.

This initiative will bring together primarily&nbsp;young participants, as well as researchers and European institutions, to reflect on the relationship between democratic memory, post-colonial legacies and the contemporary challenges facing democracy.

Over two days, the programme will include testimonies, debates, workshops and visits to sites of memory, exploring how archives, historical memory and civic engagement can contribute to strengthening democratic values and combating racism and discrimination.

The meeting will include three moments, across three memory institutions:

 - Aljube Museum – Resistance and Freedom (also at Judicial Studies Center)

 - Mário Soares and Maria Barroso Foundation

A <a href="https://fmsoaresbarroso.pt/en/events/april-happened-here-commemoration-of-the-25-april-revolution-at-largo-do-carmo">commemorative action</a> marking the&nbsp;Carnation Revolution&nbsp;will take place on 23 April at 7:00 PM at&nbsp;Largo do Carmo, an emblematic site of Portugal’s democratic transition. The initiative will consist of a symbolic placement of carnations, with the participation of the young people involved in the meeting.

The initiative is part of the European project “<a href="https://www.foster-europe.org/projekte/frei-from-resistance-to-european-integration">FREI - From Resistance to European Integration</a>”, funded by the CERV programme - Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values of the European Union, which explores European trajectories linking experiences of resistance to authoritarian regimes in the 20th century with processes of democratic construction and European integration.
