Guided tours to the Foundation in April

On&nbsp;23 and 24 April 2026, the international meeting&nbsp;“FREI – From Resistance to European Integration”&nbsp;will take place in Lisbon, under the theme&nbsp;“Unarchiving Democracy: Youth, post-colonial memory and the construction of democracy in Portugal”.&nbsp;The event will be held in English.

This initiative will bring together primarily&nbsp;young participants, as well as researchers and European institutions, to reflect on the relationship between democratic memory, post-colonial legacies and the contemporary challenges facing democracy.

Over two days, the programme will include testimonies, debates, workshops and visits to sites of memory, exploring how archives, historical memory and civic engagement can contribute to strengthening democratic values and combating racism and discrimination.

The meeting will include three moments, across three memory institutions:

 - Aljube Museum – Resistance and Freedom (also at Judicial Studies Center)

 - Mário Soares and Maria Barroso Foundation

A <a href="https://fmsoaresbarroso.pt/en/events/april-happened-here-commemoration-of-the-25-april-revolution-at-largo-do-carmo">commemorative action</a> marking the&nbsp;Carnation Revolution&nbsp;will take place on 23 April at 7:00 PM at&nbsp;Largo do Carmo, an emblematic site of Portugal’s democratic transition. The initiative will consist of a symbolic placement of carnations, with the participation of the young people involved in the meeting.

The initiative is part of the European project “<a href="https://www.foster-europe.org/projekte/frei-from-resistance-to-european-integration">FREI - From Resistance to European Integration</a>”, funded by the CERV programme - Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values of the European Union, which explores European trajectories linking experiences of resistance to authoritarian regimes in the 20th century with processes of democratic construction and European integration.

Unarchiving Democracy: Youth, Post-Colonial Memory and the Portuguese Democratic Path

As part of the European meeting&nbsp;“<a href="https://fmsoaresbarroso.pt/en/events/unarchiving-democracy-youth-post-colonial-memory-and-the-portuguese-democratic-path">Unarchiving Democracy: Youth, Post-Colonial Memory and the Making of Democracy in Portugal</a>”, a commemorative action marking the&nbsp;Carnation Revolution&nbsp;will take place.

The initiative will be held at&nbsp;Largo do Carmo&nbsp;on 23 April at 7:00 PM, a key site in Portugal’s contemporary history where decisive moments leading to the fall of the dictatorship unfolded.

“April Happened Here” invites participants to come together for a moment of remembrance and civic engagement through a symbolic placement of carnations.

The action is part of the European project&nbsp;FREI - From Resistance to European Integration, which promotes reflection on the paths linking resistance to authoritarian regimes with the construction of democracy and the European project.

April Happened Here - Commemoration of the 25 April Revolution at Largo do Carmo

The book&nbsp;Mário Soares – Time and Memory [Mário Soares – O Tempo e a Memória], which brings together 100 articles by&nbsp;Mário Soares&nbsp;originally published in&nbsp;Diário de Notícias&nbsp;and selected by Jorge Morais, will be launched on 16 April 2026 at 6:00 pm at the Fundação Mário Soares e Maria Barroso.

The volume is published by&nbsp;Âncora Editora&nbsp;and will be presented by&nbsp;Manuel Pedroso Marques.

Guided tours to the Foundation in March

On 12 March, from 09:30 to 16:00, the workshop “Unarchiving Democracy: Using Archives in the Fight Against Racism” will take place at the School of Social Education and Social Sciences of the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria.

Drawing on the archival materials of the Mário Soares and Maria Barroso Foundation, this workshop will explore issues related to colonial legacies and racism, examining how archives can foster critical reflection on the past and contribute to challenging discriminatory narratives in the present.

The workshop will be led by Melissa Rodrigues, a visual artist, art educator and curator.

This activity is part of an event that Mário Soares and Maria Barroso Foundation is organizing within the framework of the European project FREI - From Resistance to European Integration, funded by the European Union’s CERV programme (Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values).

Unarchiving Democracy: Using Archives in the Fight Against Racism

The International Conference “Correspondence(s): The Uses of Letters in the 19th and 20th Centuries” will take place on 3 and 4 March 2026 at ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon. The call for papers is open until 15 February 2026, and researchers interested in this topic are invited to submit proposals.

The conference aims to promote research and interdisciplinary debate on the various uses of correspondence in the 19th and 20th centuries as a historical, cultural, social and political source. It brings together researchers from different fields to reflect on letters as instruments of communication, action, sociability and expression in multiple contexts.

The initiative is part of the project “Common Voices: Organisation and Study of the Correspondence between Citizens and Mário Soares during the Transition to Portuguese Democracy (1974–1978)” (2023.10596.25ABR), funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). The conference is organised by the Mário Soares and Maria Barroso Foundation and ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon.

The conference will be held in person. Remote presentations will only be permitted for researchers who are not based in Portugal.

Guided tours to the Foundation in February

On 31 January 2026, the city of Paris will pay tribute to Mário Soares, on the initiative of the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, and following a decision approved by the Municipal Council.

The tribute highlights Mário Soares’ historical connection to the French capital, where he lived in exile during the final years of the dictatorship in Portugal, and will take place through two symbolic moments on the same day:

1. Inauguration of the “Mário Soares Garden”, in the 20th arrondissement, at 50 rue Pixérécourt

The green space located at 50 rue Pixérécourt, inaugurated in 1984 and covering approximately 1,500 m², will be renamed Mário Soares Garden.

2. Unveiling of a commemorative plaque at 17 boulevard Garibaldi, 15th arrondissement

A plaque will also be unveiled on the building where Mário Soares lived between 1970 and 1974 during his exile in Paris.
