The Mário Soares and Maria Barroso Foundation will host the presentation of the collection “Masters of the Portuguese Language”, by Jorge Chichorro Rodrigues. The collection will be presented by Edite Estrela.

The event will take place on 24 September at 6:00 p.m., in the auditorium of the Mário Soares and Maria Barroso Foundation (Rua de S. Bento, 160, Lisbon).

The “Masters of the Portuguese Language” collection, written by Jorge Chichorro Rodrigues, was published between January 2015 and January 2023 and features thirty-one authors from different Portuguese-speaking countries. The 32nd and final volume, “From Homeland to the Fraternity of Language”, is an essay which, drawing on the authors featured in the collection, all of whom are deceased, takes readers on a journey through the world of the Portuguese language, from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Gil Vicente, Fernão Lopes, Fernão Mendes Pinto, Luís de Camões, Bocage, Almeida Garrett, Camilo Castelo Branco, Eça de Queiroz, Cesário Verde, Fernando Pessoa, Florbela Espanca, Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, José Saramago, Machado de Assis, Cecília Meireles, Carlos Drummond de Andrade, Jorge Amado, Eugénio Tavares, Alda Lara, José Craveirinha and Fernando Sylvan are among the authors represented in the collection. Encompassing the three major literary genres - narrative, poetry and drama - the collection explores different literary movements and aesthetics, from medieval poetry to Modernism, including Classicism and Romanticism.

The volume dedicated to Fernando Pessoa was adapted for the stage by Teatro Passagem de Nível, from Alfornelos, winning the Ruy de Carvalho Award at the National Theatre Competition in 2016. The volumes on Gil Vicente and Pêro Vaz de Caminha were also adapted into short films.
