Mário Soares Library

The Foundation owns an important bibliographic collection, kept at the João Lopes Soares Library, in Cortes, and partly at the Mário Soares Library, in Lisbon – with special reference to the Mário Soares Fund.

The Mário Soares Library, with approximately 25,000 titles, is specialized in the fields of political science, contemporary history, international relations and human rights. Special reference should be made to the Mário Soares fund, which is part of his personal library, estimated in roughly 80,000 titles, but also to private libraries, resulting from the incorporation of archives into the Foundation, and the Foundation’s own bibliographical collection.

“Hopelessly, I could never live without books!”
Mário Soares

João Lopes Soares Library

The João Soares Library, opened in 1998, has a bibliographic collection composed of donations (from The Mário Soares and Maria Barroso Foundation, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, private individuals) and acquisitions. The Library is part of the Leiria Libraries Network and is integrated with the respective collective catalogue.

With more than 25 thousand titles, the library catalogue includes general consultation references and works by national and foreign authors, a vast collection of books recommended by the National Reading Plan and a significant representation of writers hailing from the region of Leiria (e.g., Afonso Lopes Vieira and Francisco Rodrigues Lobo).

The access to the library, reading and consultation of its bibliographic collection, is open to all and free of charge. You may register as reader by personally addressing the Museum-House, or sending an email to casa-museu@fmsoaresbarroso.pt with the following data: name, address, phone contact and email address.
