Opening of Marques Valentim's Exhibitions on Mário Soares and Maria Barroso and Launch of the Book Portugal: From Dictatorship to Democracy
The Mário Soares and Maria Barroso Foundation will inaugurate, on 18 June at 6:00 pm, the photographic exhibitions Mário Soares - The Unsubmissive and Maria Barroso - A Woman of Causes, by photojournalist Marques Valentim.
On the same occasion, the book Portugal: From Dictatorship to Democracy, a photographic work by Marques Valentim, with texts by Daniel Bastos and a foreword by João Barroso Soares, will also be presented.
Each exhibition brings together a selection of 25 photographs, offering a unique perspective on two of the central figures of Portuguese democracy and revisiting significant moments in the political and civic journeys of Mário Soares and Maria Barroso.
Published in a bilingual edition (Portuguese and English), Portugal: From Dictatorship to Democracy brings together more than two hundred photographs documenting some of the defining moments of Portugal’s recent history. From the final years of the Colonial War in 1972 to the country’s democratisation process and its accession to the then European Economic Community in 1985, the book stands as a remarkable visual testimony to contemporary Portugal.
Admission is free.
