Mário Soares: A Man in Full

As part of the commemorations of the Centenary of Mário Soares, linked to the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the 25 April Revolution and the four decades since the signing of Portugal’s Accession Treaty to the EEC, the photographic exhibition “Mário Soares: A Man in Full” is both a historical and artistic record of one of the foremost protagonists of contemporary Portugal.
A unique visual testimony, the 50 photographs on display were taken over three decades by Luís Vasconcelos: during the revolutionary period, the consolidation of democracy and later, as President of the Republic. They reveal remarkable public and private moments of Mário Soares, capturing his many facets and expressions in diverse settings and circumstances.
In these photographs, Soares appears at political rallies and on campaign trails across the country, at official ceremonies and in moments of reflection, informality and relaxation, alongside leading national and international political and cultural figures, and out on the streets, close to the people. Luís Vasconcelos’ images portray Soares’ zest for life, his spontaneous laughter, contemplative silences, solemn demeanour, attentive gaze, impassioned speeches, inviting us to reflect on his legacy.
The exhibition is organised by the Commission for the Centenary of Mário Soares and the University of Lisbon, with the support of the Commission Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the 25 April Revolution, Lisbon City Council and Caixa Geral de Depósitos. It is on show at the Pavilion of Portugal from 18 September 2025 to 15 January 2026, with free admission.
