Concert in honour of Maria Barroso on the day of her centenary
The 100th anniversary of Maria Barroso's birth will be marked on May 2, the day of her birthday, with a tribute concert at the Centro Cultural de Belém (CCB) in Lisbon. As part of the Mário Soares Centenary celebrations, the concert will represent ‘a meeting of centenarians’, in which all the songs will be performed by young instrumentalists and singers under the musical direction of conductor Joana Carneiro.
The concert will feature young musicians from the Escola Artística de Música do Conservatório Nacional, the Orquestra Geração, the Escola Artística do Instituto Gregoriano de Lisboa, the Escola de Música de Nossa Senhora do Cabo and the Escola de Música do Colégio Moderno, as well as the Voces Caelestes choir.
Scheduled for 9pm in the CCB's Grand Auditorium, the concert will begin with the overture from Ludwig van Beethoven's Egmont, followed by Gabriel Fauré's Cantique de Jean Racine and then the first and last movements of Felix Mendelssohn's Psalm 42. Then there will be the Christian Zeale and Activity by John Adams, which will be played for the first time in Portugal, and finally the last movement of Ludwig van Beethoven's 9th Symphony, which will close the concert.
